resurvey Act 9/1879; parent diagram 3102
[8 Aug 2026] THE FACE. "The above diagram colored yellow represents the farm MIDDLEWATER in extent 10731 morgen 100 sq. roods situate in the Zwartberg. Division of Prince Albert." Bounded North by Remhoogte, South by Klein Vlei, East by Rondable & Klaarstroom, West by Remhoogte & Venterskloof. "Resurveyed under Act No. 9 - 1879. (Sgd.) J. A. Thwaits, Government Surveyor. October 1883." Examiner: "The numerical data of this diagram are sufficiently consistent. No. 1364/1883. (Sgd.) Max Jurisch, Examiner." Copy stamp: "Copied from the diagram relating to Quitrent ... P.A.Q.3-3, dated 24th March 1884, in favour of J. D. J. OOSTHUYSEN, AND ANOTHER", re-stamped Surveyor-General Cape Town 18-2-1956. Scale 400 roods to one inch; "3102" in pencil top right, the parent diagram cited on DOC-0038; "* Act 9/1879, BA004/1883"; sheets BL-1, BL-2, BL-4.ACA; "For list of deductions see back of diagram", which is DOC-0039.
JURISCH'S NOTE CAN STILL BE CHECKED. The figure has eleven sides and eleven beacons (R, R', N, H, B, Z, O, S, B, M, L) with sides, angles and co-ordinates tabled. The eleven interior angles sum to exactly 1620 deg 00' 00", which is (11-2) x 180 to the arcsecond. Sides total 11,609.05 roods, a perimeter of 43.86 km.
THE GRANTEE. "J. D. J. Oosthuysen" is Jacobus Daniel Johannes OosthuizenM, PER-000004 (1823-1903): initials, surname, farm, and a man alive and of age in 1884. "AND ANOTHER" is not named on the sheet and the co-grantee is unidentified. The verso shows 86% of the farm leaving three months after the title issued, so whether this was a sale or a partition between two co-owners turns on who that was. LEAD-0136.
THE FARM GREW BETWEEN ITS TWO SURVEYS. Stretch's 1833 loan-farm survey (DOC-0038) gives 8,843 morgen "including the Government ground DROOGE KLOOF"; this resurvey gives 10,731 morgen 100 roods, 1,888 morgen more. In 1833 the northern and eastern neighbours are "Government ground"; here they are Remhoogte, Rondable and Klaarstroom. Government ground between the farms being taken up over those fifty years fits both sheets, but neither says so. [TO VERIFY]
KLEIN VLEI IS A NEIGHBOUR HERE, NOT A PORTION. It stands in the bounded-by list beside Remhoogte, Rondable, Klaarstroom and Venterskloof, all neighbouring farms, and appears nowhere in the verso's deduction table. The 1833 sheet calls the same neighbour "Klein Valle" and puts it west rather than south, which is what a farm lying to the south-west gets called by two different hands. Note REMHOOGTE as spelt here against "Reim Hoogte" on PAR-000092.
THE PORTION NAMES ARE OLDER THAN THE PORTIONS. AVONDRUST and VASTE WATER are both written on this 1883 face, 43 and 40 years before they were cut out as 169/6 (1926) and 169/5 (1923). Vaste Water is drawn as a small blue pan with a beacon at it, in the same south-western quarter where the 1833 sheet draws the werf, the vineyard and the 20 morgen of arable.
COLOUR, UNRESOLVED. A pink edge-wash runs along the northern and north-eastern boundary and a bright yellow one along the south-western, the yellow continuing up a single internal black line from beacon z to near Vaste Water. The verso's first deduction is "the part marked pink". Which side of that internal line is the pink part is not legible at this resolution. [TO VERIFY] from a higher-resolution copy.
